Immersing herself in the subterranean sections of a working limestone quarry in the South of France, not far from the birth of Modernism, the artist Tooney Phillips has recorded its changing geometric formations for over twenty- five years through drawing and photography. Drawing on her experience as an architect and her fascination with this strange and unfamiliar landscape, Phillips has developed a body of work including printmaking, collage and photography for her solo exhibition ‘Constructed Topography’ at The Foundry Gallery that explores our perception of space. Her work is primarily abstract in nature, she describes and explores the contours, the very edges of the space(s) that can be found within the quarry’s geometric formation.
