Starting with found transferware ceramics produced over the last 250 years, Paul Scott works onto the scenes and imagery that are the hallmark of this industrially produced tableware, and offers new narrative interpretations.
Polite society would sip soup from bowls decorated with idyllic or exotic landscapes, such as this bowl from the Syria Series, the cultural references being rendered anodyne by their quotidian domestic use. For Scott, however, this cultural artefact becomes a pertinent context for more brutal contemporary readings.
