Following our triumphant solo showing of Liam Ryan at PULSE Miami 2012, THE RESIDENCE GALLERY proudly presents 'PROTOVISION'.
Composed of layers of luminous glazes, Liam Ryan's paintings are the product of a semi-automatism. Even when beginning with a pre-conceived idea, the artist is led by material accidents to develop and refine the emerging image. The image thus has a measure of autonomy, in the best cases it speaks with its own voice. While not abstract, the figurative elements are systematically disrupted - less abstract than an abstraction rooted in figuration. Much of the disruption is spatial. Exploiting the spatial clues of form and coloration, the artist depicts inconsistent and ambiguous spaces left for the viewer to resolve and reinterpret as they engage with the work.
Liam was awarded the prestigious Royal Dublin Society Taylor Prize for painting (2006) and completed his MA at Central St Martins with a scholarship from Lismore Castle Arts (2009). Liam has exhibited throughout Ireland, Berlin, Miami and London and has work in private collections in the UK and abroad.
