Sylvain Lefebvre was born in 1966 in the Basque Country (France). As a young man Lefebvre came to London where he worked in a variety of roles: scene-painter for film, theatre and opera; video director and short filmmaker.
During the 90s he extended his practice into comic-book illustration, collage and printmaking. His growing reputation led to an invitation to exhibit with a prestigious French gallery. He produced thirty paintings for this debut show, combining elements of collage and drawing. It was the launch of a successful artistic career.
'When it comes to define my work the first word that comes to mind is "imaginary." I like always looking for destinations that do not exist.'
In this new exhibition each painting tells a story from a world of strange characters and fantastical landscapes. Sylvain Lefebvre is like a great explorer.
