cueB Gallery is proud to present the second edition of Sonic cueB - three days of experimental and electronic music featuring emerging and established, national and international artists presenting solo works in the heart of south east London. Performances are on the Monday 24th - Wednesday 26th March 7pm -11.30pm, at cueB Gallery - The Brockley Mess Café, 325 Brockley Road, London SE4 2QZ (tickets £20 festival pass, £8 single event, £6 concession at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sonic-cueb-tickets-10184591387) Sonic cueB is a festival of original music curated by composer Luca Nasciuti and will showcase an eclectic range of practices combining sound art, noise, drone, acousmatic, ambient, electroacoustic, and electronic music by artists Ain Bailey (UK), Marios Athanasiou (GR), Alessio Ballerini (IT), Kira Kira (IS), Timur Kuyanov (SE-RU), Yiorgis Sakellariou (GR), Iris Garrelfs (UK-DE), Lina Lapelyte (LT), Sam Salem (UK). Sonic cueB is also an opportunity for artists to develop a dialogue within the diverse range of experimental music forms encouraging the production and discussion of collaborative performances that will be presented every night. He explores real and imaginary landscapes by using field recordings, guitar, piano and digital composition, so that the sound finds its beauty in the harmonic ambient substrate.
He has been a member of the cinematographic group Postodellefragole since 2004.
In 2010, he founded AIPS - Archivio Italiano Paesaggi Sonori together with Francesco Giannico. In 2013, always with Giannico he founded Oak, an art music label.
He has collaborated and shared the stage with Alva Noto, Lawrence English, Oval, Retina, Enrico Coniglio, Senking, Erik Skodvin, Giuseppe Cordaro, Francesco Giannico, TU M', Pietro Riparbelli. Iris Garrelfs is a composer/performer intrigued by change, fascinated with voices and enamoured by technology. She often uses her voice as raw material, which she transmutes into machine noises, choral works or pulverised 'into granules of electroacoustic babble and glitch, generating animated dialogues between innate human expressiveness and the overt artifice of digital processing” as the Wire Magazine put it. Moulding complex sonic or multi-sensorial collages, her work has been compared to artists such as Yoko Ono, Henri Chopin, Joan La Barbara, Meredith Monk and Arvo Part. Pieces and performances have featured in exhibitions, festivals and as part of residencies internationally, including the Barbican, International Computer Music Conference, GSK Contemporary at the Royal Academy Of Arts, Gaudeamus Live Electronics Festival, (Amsterdam 2007), and Visiones Sonoras (Mexico 2006). Now in its 18th year, Iris is one of the founding directors/curators of Sprawl, advocating experimental sound through live events and recordings, which has seen collaborations including the Tate Modern and the Goethe Institute, featuring internationally renowned artists such David Toop, Jem Finer, Vladislav Delay, Pole and many more. She is currently an AHRC PhD research fellow at LCC in London where she also teaches on the BA Sonic Art. Marios Athanasiou studied Film and Music at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and in 2003 he moved to London where he worked as a touring guitarist and composer until 2010. In 2011 he completed an MMus in Studio Composition at Goldsmiths College, London. In February 2012 he attended the Choreography and 3D-Sound workshop in Zurich, which was organised by Tanzhaus and the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology of the ZHdK. In January 2014 he launched channelnormal.com, an online exhibition space that predominantly focuses on presenting time-based and web-based works. His work explores how technology can be used to distort, manipulate and alter human perception of reality. Tuesday 25th March Lina Lapelyte lives and works in London and Vilnius. She is an artist, composer, musician and performer. In her recent works such as operas Have a good Day! and Candy Shop she has been exploring the phenomena of song. Using song as an object, Lina examines the issues of displacement, otherness and beauty. Re-enactment supports her investigation into aesthetics, control and reality. Recently along with Rie Nakajima, Richard Skelton and Jennifer Walshe she has been shortlisted for the Arts foundation award for the experimental music. Brian Eno described her practice as ' working right at the edge of what popular music could become.' Lina Lapelyte has been exhibiting and performing at the David Roberts Arts Foundation (London), CCA (Glasgow), ICA (London), CAC (Vilnius), Ikon Gallery (Birmingham), BBC Proms (London), Tate Modern (London), Skopje Bienalle (Skopje), Spor (Aarhus), Echoraum (Vienna) and Holland Festival (Amsterdam). Timur Kuyanov is a Siberian artist based in Stockholm. Graduated from Aalto University, Finland, with Master Degree in Sound Design. He slso studied at UdK Berlin and Valand School of Art, Gothenburg. His work is inspired by shaman practices of local people of Siberia as well as the industrial past of his home country. Rhythmical structures, soundscapes, and repetitive patterns are basis of his performances, serving as a material for non-verbal narratives of the sound and visual journeys. He is a member of Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm. Yiorgis Sakellariou is a sound artist and composer working in the fields of electroacoustic music and phonography. In 2003 he launched the project 'Mecha/Orga”, a vehicle for sonic exploration and research. Since then he has been active internationally being responsible for solo albums, having composed music for short films and theatrical performances, leading workshops and ceaselessly performing his music around the globe. His practice is founded on the digital manipulation of environmental recordings. His palette of sounds is all encompassing; from vibrating rail-tracks to refrigerators' static, and from noisy waterfalls to the humming of insects. He only performs in absolute darkness, fostering an all-inclusive and profoundly submerging sonic experience. Yiorgis Sakellariou is a member of the Athenian Contemporary Music Research Centre (founded by I. Xenakis) and the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association. Since 2004 he has curated the label Echomusic. Wednesday 26th March Kira Kira is Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir, a composer and audio/visual prankster from Iceland. As a founding member of Kitchen Motors, a mischievous label and collective based on experiments in electronic music and arts, she continually breaks boundaries between forms and genres through a repertoire that includes compositions for theatre, film, dance and art installations - as well as playful multi-disciplinary productions that exceed her work as merely a composer. Kira Kira sprang from this collective in 1999 and to this day works with Kitchen Motors' ethos at heart -a spirit of playfulness, exploring the relationship between experimental music and visual arts, collaborating with various artists.
At first Kira Kira played solo but since year 2008 she has recorded and played with a wide range of musicians, mostly trumpet player Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson, Finnish percussionist Samuli Kosminen, contrabass wizard Borgar Magnason and artist Alex Somers as well as guitarists Hilmar Jensson and Pétur Hallgrímsson. Her first feature film as director and screenwriter, Grandma Lo-fi - The Basement Tapes of Sigridur Nielsdottir is just out and has been celebrated in New York's Museum of Modern Art; MoMA, CPH Dox, SXSW and a plethora of other festivals around the world. Ain Bailey is a sound artist and dj living and working in London. She especially focuses on creating compositions involving diverse mediums, such as field recordings and found sounds, which are inspired by ideas and reflections on silence and absence, architectural urban spaces, and feminist activism. Her electroacoustic compositions are created for a variety of forms, including multichannel and mixed media installations, moving image soundtracks, and live performance. Recent performances of her work in 2013 have taken place at A Concert of Sounds Arts at Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank; Ode To No. 6 | The Pitch Sisters Live! at Iniva and the sound artists group show Night of the Tin Tabernacle. Bailey has collaborated with a range of artists including Sonia Boyce, where they created a sound and film installation entitled 'Oh Adelaide' (2010). Bailey's recent compositions include 'Ode To No. 6' (2012), a meditation on the 'unheard' in her domestic space; 'The Pitch Sisters' (2012), a multichannel compositional response to a line contained within Leslie Thornton's 1984 film 'Peggy and Fred In Hell: The Prologue', and the soundtrack to Jordan McKenzie's 'Feral' (2012). Sam Salem currently resides in Manchester (UK), where he completed a MUSM in Electroacoustic Music Composition in 2007 and a PhD in Composition in 2011 at the University of Manchester. His work is focussed upon the sounds of urban environments: each of his pieces focuses upon a specific geographical location. His music aspires to illuminate and explore the hidden musicality and beauty of his geographical subjects, as well as his own relationship to his environment as both a source of inspiration and musical material.
