The Hour of The King / Stories of The Lost

This exhibition brings together two very differing artists who both have the same penchant for dark melancholic imagery. Malwina Chabocka is not only a painter, but also an illustrator and storyteller, who has recently created two children's books. The narrative paintings in this exhibition are the heart of a short graphic novel due to be completed later this year. William Andris Wood, is a devoted figurative and portrait painter, with a similar ethos and techniques to old Masters such as Rembrandt, Goya, and Delacroix. 'The Hour of the King” is a story about the relationship between a little girl and her mentally degenerating grandmother. Loosely based on Malwina's own childhood memories, it is a compelling and dark tale of emotional disintegration, seen through the eyes of a child who reaches out for the fantastic and the symbolic as ways that attempt to decipher an otherwise incomprehensible reality. 'Stories of the Lost” is a series of portraits of people who have gone off the beaten track, towards emotional solitude, denial and even death. Gathering from his own personal experience of depression, William has created incredibly moving depictions of characters from a shabby Oxford pub. The viewer is enabled to take a closer look at people who, day by day, escape from the world by hiding themselves behind a pint glass and a pool table.
