Philip Sutton RA was born in Poole and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under William Coldstream, where he later taught. He travelled extensively, painting and exhibiting as he went, and now lives and works in Bridport. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1988.
Sutton’s most intensive printmaking years were during some of his travels in the 1970s, printing flowers, faces and foliage from thin wooden boards, with results which draw comparisons to Pop Art, Matisse’s late paper cut-outs, or the simplifying conventions of Gary Hume.
This joyful exhibition in our Café Gallery runs alongside our main exhibition, Making and Breaking the Rules: Royal Academy 250 at the Russell-Cotes, also containing works by Sutton.
