F I E L D N O T E S | Collage Works at The Bindery

Incorporating photography, drawing and text, Artists Anna Van Oosterom, Andrew Hewish and Jacopo Dal Bello explore the medium of collage in a show with Aleph Contemporary, at 1930s art deco building and former bookbinders, The Bindery.

Andrew Hewish is a London-based contemporary artist and curator. He has exhibited (and his work is collected) internationally. He holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art (RCA) and is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the School of Art, Architecture and Design (formerly the Sir John Cass School). He was awarded a British Empire Medal for his services to the arts in 2020 and is the founder of UK Charity: Centre for Recent Drawing.

Anna Van Oosterom has degrees in both Literature and Social Studies from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and a degree in Interior design from Perk Interieur opleiding Eindhoven. She has exhibited internationally with her most recent exhibition ‘Waiting’ held at Allied Artists of America, New York this year and ‘Stairs’ at Green and Stone gallery, London, 2021.

Jacopo Dal Bello is a Berlin based artist originally from North-East Italy. He studied at the Cass School of Art and the Byam Shaw School of Fine Art in London and currently attends the Universität der Künste in Berlin. He has had three solo exhibitions and his work has been featured in many group and two-person shows internationally.

In an accompanying text to the exhibition, Hewish writes “Elements are cast anew as striking visual works that are lyrical in their associations that speak in a new language from the old… While some works in this exhibition are from direct observations, recordings or sensations in situ – recalling plein air practice - what binds the works in this exhibition is the play of language, a use of collage and the shared field of that play in the rectangle.”

The Bindery
The Bindery, formerly a book binders in Hatton Garden, is built within a 1930s Art Deco building. The building has been designed by architects Piercy & Company, and the landscaping on the terrace and roof garden by Andy Sturgeon. Guided by Carbon Intelligence, sustainability has been central to this project. The Bindery is owned by Dorrington Plc.
