Wolverhampton Art Gallery is a special place. Funded by a donation of £5,000 from a local businessman, Philip Horsman the gallery opened to the public in 1885 and originally housed the School of Art.
Today, situated in the heart of the city, the gallery provides a safe and creative space, free of charge for Wolverhampton residents and visitors to share and enjoy. Our programme of exhibitions, events and activities change throughout the year so there is always something new to discover.
Inclusive accessible facilities can be found across the venue that include the gallery café, shop, courtyard garden, picnic area and places for creativity, community and contemplation.
OUR COLLECTION
Wolverhampton Art Gallery houses over 18,000 artworks and objects ranging from items reflecting the Black Country’s manufacturing industries to iconic works by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.
The collections began in the late 1800s with donations from local industrialists and has since grown in scope and importance due to its visionary collecting policies and the generosity of funders.
The gallery is now famous for its collection of Pop Art as well as a major collection of works relating the Troubles of Northern Ireland and one of the most significant collections of works by Black British artists.
